In School Programmes
Our ‘in school’ visual arts programmes for Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 are inspired by local contemporary Toronto artists. Blank Canvases is a programme inspired by our mission to provide children in schools in the GTA with authentic and sophisticated art lessons. These unique kids’ art classes in Toronto began as a partnership when parents from Niagara Public School in Toronto approached local artists to help enrich their visual arts engagement in the school. Blank Canvases has a sophisticated art class for children and has now expanded into over one hundred schools across the GTA.

Art Classes in the Schools in the GTA
The program uses the inspiration of both historical and contemporary Toronto artists as the foundation for each lesson. At the beginning of the lesson, students see images and learn about the art and life of the specific Toronto artist or art collective. Afterwards, students are led through an art lesson inspired by the technique of this artist, culminating in the creation of their unique art piece. The classes are designed by qualified art education specialists who work with out learning outcomes to meet the Ontario Ministry Visual Arts Curriculum standards.
Teaching Methods of Artists in the Classrooms
The Blank Canvases Art Educator uses methods that allow children to create and express their individuality to the best of their ability. This includes best practices in arts education, which reflect open-ended choice-making, encouraging individuality, fostering of expression, and focusing on process rather than product. The lessons use art-making to promote qualities of group camaraderie, mutual respect, positive self-esteem, and critical and creative thinking skills.

“They delivered a great class that I could not have conducted without them. What made the lesson so valuable is that it exposed students to experiences in art that they wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity for.”
