Sean Skeir African Mask Portraits: Mixed Media Collage

Lesson Length time: Two Hours

Lesson Objective

Through exploring the work of artist Shawn Skeir, and learning about his techniques and processes, students will learn how to go about making their own mixed media collage portrait inspired by African Masks from various countries.

Materials

  • Pencil, eraser

  • Scissors

  • White glue or glue stick

  • Papers for sketching – A4 size or similar

  • Sharpie or similar black marker

  • Assorted colour markers or pencil crayons

  • Assorted papers for collage – construction paper, magazines, newspapers, fliers (in variety of colours)

  • A4 size (or similar) cardstock or thick paper as base (if available)

  • Large popsicle stick to convert artwork into a mask (if available)

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices (collage, mixed media art, cubism)

  • explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)

  • explore principles of design,

  • learn about a local artist their art and African Masks from a variety of countries

  • have an opportunity to explore with materials and concepts

  • be encouraged to create art in a comfortable and supportive environment

  • apply critical thinking skills in their analysis of artwork and creation of their own artwork
