Benny Bing: Colour Expressive Portrait Painting

Lesson Objective

By exploring the paintings of Benny Bing, a Toronto based artist of Nigerian descent, the students will learn about his techniques and his passion for portraiture illuminated through the use of complimenting acrylic hues. The students will become more familiar with colour theory, art vocabulary and elements and principles of design to be able to create their own expressionist portrait painting using acrylic paints.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • learn the vocabulary of art techniques and practices (portrait, expressionism, proportion, painting techniques, style)

  • explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)

  • explore principles of design, particularly variety (gr. 3), emphasis (gr. 4), proportion (gr. 5), balance (gr. 6)

  • learn about a local artist and their art

  • have an opportunity to explore with materials, tools and concepts

  • be encouraged to create art in a comfortable and supportive environment

  • apply critical thinking skills in their analysis of artwork and the creation of their own artwork
