Joyce Wieland: Quilting

Lesson Objective

Learn about quilting as a subversive art form. Through exploring the art work of Joyce Wieland and her use of quilting to convey her messages, students will create an “Art Quilt”. Each quilt square revolves around a common theme yet allows each student to express their individual perspective on it.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • learn vocabulary of art techniques and practices (collage, composition, fabric art, contrasting colours/shapes/textures)

  • explore elements of design (shape and form, space, line, colour, texture and value)

  • explore principles of design (balance, emphasis, harmony, movement, proportion, rhythm, unity, variety)

  • learn about a local artist and their art

  • have an opportunity to explore with different materials and concepts

  • be encouraged to create art in a comfortable and supportive environment

  • apply critical and creative thinking skills in their analysis of art work and creation of their own art work
