Tonya Hart: Arctic Animals

Grade level: K-6

Lesson length time: 2 hours (plus 45 min for set up and 30 mins for clean up)

Lesson Objective

In her artist statement, Tonya Hart claims “The Arctic Circle calls for a new sensibility with some of the most vulnerable animals on earth. Between the earth and the sky, we stand within the possibility of everything.” Through creating sculptural animals children will have an opportunity to think, create and learn about the animals from the arctic and their natural environment while observing how light and shadow acts as an important element for the meaning of the sculptures.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • develop decision-making skills and problem solving (both individually and with others)

  • develop methods of symbolic communication and initiate sensory development

  • be thoroughly involved in the whole artistic process. Demonstrating an awareness of themselves as artists.

  • learn about a local artist and their art

  • have an opportunity to explore with materials and concepts

  • be encouraged to create art in a comfortable and supportive environment

  • apply critical thinking skills in their analysis of art work and creation of their own art work
